My Weeding Brigade

Seems like as I get older, I find more things to interest me but the number of hours in a day does not expand to accommodate them. When I checked in on my unheated greenhouse, I was greeted by an explosion of spring weeds. The green was beautiful but I wondered when I would have the time to get to them so that I could plant some early seedlings. Then I remembered a correspondence from another Organic Gardening Test Gardener about chickens cleaning up her garden.

Chickens! I have six of various kinds and they like this kind of work. It took me a while to lead them in the first time, even with a mug of corn. But after that, they pranced in expectantly, glad to nibble and scratch somewhere other than in their yard that had been dug clean long ago. Not only have they trampled and eaten much of the chickweed and loosened the soil, I’m hoping that they’ll put a dent in the population of baby slugs, ants and other such critters. What great workers, and fresh eggs, too!
