I was alerted of two movements today that people are encouraging me to participate in over the next month. The first is Rodale.com’s Plastic-Free February, the three rules of which are 1) No buying or acquiring new plastic, 2) no cooking with, or storing food in, plastic, 3) Minimize all other plastic use. Not so bad, right? Until I think about my (hard) plastic water bottle, my lean cuisines, my pens, my cell phone, my tupperware, my car. Okay, so now I see the point in the last statement – minimize. After all, a girls got to get to work so she can write her blog.
The second is actually in response to the fact that February is “National Snack Food Month” (it’s also “American Heart Month” which is an irony for another time). The #20ate movement is the attempt to avoid all snack foods for the month of February (get it? 20ate=28 days in February). This also seemed easy to me until realizing that there’s a little day this month when I pig out on all of the chocolate I can find.
But, if I go plastic-free, it automatically banishes all snack foods, with their plastic wrappers.
So, I’ve decided to give it a try. I’ll dust off my aluminum water bottle, throw out my chips (that’s going to hurt), and count down the days til March. Now there’s only one question – will you join with me?
