A Month of Trying New Things

January is a time of new beginnings and, of course, new resolutions. In my effort to become a better cook/food writer/organic chick, I’ve decided to explore the various dietary lifestyles chosen by many of my organic colleagues. I will try them both as culinary endeavors and as healthy ways of living, which is to say I want to see if they help me cook and feel better.

The plan is to do each for a week. First vegetarian, then vegan, then gluten-free, and finally….RAW. Eating raw for a week terrifies me, but raw (where nothing is cooked over 104 degrees) foodists swear by the lifestyle. My reason for putting this on the blog is two-fold. First, I’m hoping that you all will hold me accountable, and that I will actually go through with all four weeks. Second, and most importantly, I want to explore these for you. Have you considered vegetarianism, or heard about gluten-free but never quite understood it? I, an avowed burger and fish lover, will go there for you.

Now, on to Vegetarian week. oy.

Which of these dietary lifestyles have you tried?

I’ve done vegetarian, and liked it – I still consider myself an omnivorous vegephile. I’ve never seen any reason to go vegan; I see it as slightly unnatural. Raw? There are a lot of things that really do digest better (clinically speaking, not just anecdotally) if at least lightly cooked. Especially if you are, ahem, “older.” (I’m 50; hubby is 66.) Gluten-free is more complex yet; it’s not a dietary choice for some people, but a health necessity. I don’t do reduced-gluten baking to follow a fad (at my age, wheat’s old-fashioned-ness is a GOOD thing!) but to aid my gluten-sensitive husband’s digestion. But I hope your gluten-free week will point up how genuinely tasty some of the “alternative” flours can be, so they’ll become more popular and I’ll have a better chance of finding them in an ordinary grocery store.
    Oh, and have fun!
